Your Child’s First Words Can Reveal A Lot More About Them As This Dad Finds Out!

Will you put the crackers on the table?, Kathleen tells me and before we know it, we hear a squeaky little voice go, cwackers cwackers cwackers So, while we are impressed by this skill of his, we also need to be careful about the words and language we use at home (me especially), because so easily and quickly a word like shit, stupid, dumbass, a$$ (and a lot worse) could become a part of his vocabulary and we certainly dont want the ones to be teaching him those words. Hes therefore either telling me that Papa, you need to take your bag, wear your shoes and dont forget your umbrella before you leave, or hes simply a show-off saying, I know all these words and these are the things you do before you leave for work every morning theyre so simple; what else is there to work really! It has to be exciting to explore that you can now communicate clearly with your parents and tell them how you truly feel or what you really want rather than just scream, shout or simply point; it is definitely exciting when an adult learns a new skill or accomplishes something, so I can only imagine what a little toddler feels as he keeps adding new words to his vocabulary.

Boyzone (who remembers them), that ridiculous blonde-haired boy band of the 90s sang that song… “It’s only words, words are all I have…â€_x009d_ It’s pretty much the same with a quickly growing and eager to learn toddler. Besides the odd scream, shriek and a point at things, he wants to communicate and communicate fast, with the new words that he is learning every day. And what’s more important is that he is not shy to let us know that he is learning these new words and what they truly mean. So when he sees the famous red London bus on the road, or when he rides one, he is not afraid to scream “Buuuuuussssss!!!!!â€_x009d_…. “See mom, dad … and everyone else… I can now see and more importantly say Buuuuuuuussssssâ€_x009d_, he seems to be suggesting with his scream!

With Kian, we are amazed and the speed of this learning and how quickly he is picking up some of these words (as some in my family would say, “touch woodâ€_x009d_). It is almost as though Kathleen and I have a parrot in the house that is repeating just about every other word we say. “Will you put the crackers on the table?â€_x009d_, Kathleen tells me and before we know it, we hear a squeaky little voice go, “… cwackers… cwackers… cwackers…â€_x009d_ So, while we are impressed by this skill of his, we also need to be careful about the words and language we use at home (me especially), because so easily and quickly a word like “shit, stupid, dumbass, a$$… (and a lot worse)â€_x009d_ could become a part of his vocabulary and we certainly don’t want the ones to be teaching him those words.

Impressive! That’s all we can say (and Kian doesn’t repeat that… at least not yet), as we marvel at this little man; we are truly impressed and amazed by the speed at which he is picking up these words and associating them with things and actions in our daily lives! For instance, on the mornings when Kian is up before I head off to work, he leads me out towards the door, points to my bag. “Baaachâ€_x009d_, he says; next is “Shoooosâ€_x009d_ (for shoes) and finally comes the “ellaâ€_x009d_ (or umbrella). He’s therefore either telling me that “Papa, you need to take your bag, wear your shoes and don’t forget your umbrella before you leaveâ€_x009d_, or he’s simply a show-off saying, “I know all these words and these are the things you do before you leave for work every morning… they’re so simple; what else is there to work reallyâ€_x009d_!

What we are also noticing is that he is doing so not only with English words, but with words in Tagalog and the odd Hindi or Sindhi word I am throwing into our conversations. Before we know it, he will be speaking entire sentences and relaying to us his every move, every step and every action during the day… in not one, not two… but three distinct languages! (Maybe I need to revisit my stance on teaching him more than just English or at least inculcating traces of some other languages in his vocabulary now).

I am not sure what it is that has led to his development and ability to pick up words so quickly… whether it is his own intellect and genetic make-up, his love for books, or our insistence on speaking to him in full words and sentences from the very beginning. It could be a combination of all of these factors, or none of them at all, and something entirely different and unrelated. Whatever it is, we are counting his words, watching them evolve into coherent sentences and are excited when that barrage of words and sentences is unleashed. Like every parent and human, we are already excited about and looking forward to what’s ahead… but for the moment, I am appreciating and very much enjoying the shrieks of joy, the mumbo-jumbo and the odd “Buuuuuuuuuusssssss!!!!â€_x009d_
