Dalia Porrdige
Ingredients
- 1/2 Cup Dalia (broken wheat)
- 1 1/2 Tbsp Ghee
- 1 Cup Milk
- 1 1/2 Cup Water
- 2 Tbsp Sugar/ Jaggery
- A handful of chopped nuts (optional)
Method
- Melt the ghee in a pressure cooker.
- Add the dalia and roast till it gives off a nice nutty aroma.
- Add water and pressure cook for 3-4 whistles.
- Open the cooker once the cooker pressures is released and mix well.
- Add sugar/jaggery to sweeten the dalia.
- Add milk to the dalia to thin it to the consistency you require.
- For babies add a spoon of dry fruit nut powder. Top with chopped nuts for older children.
Note:
Serve it lukewarm
You can add dry fruit nut powder to the dalia
You can also add stewed apples/bananas for a change of taste

Dalia Khichdi
Ingredients
- ½ Cup Moong Dal
- 3-4 Cloves Garlic grated
- 1 Medium Onion Chopped
- 1 Medium Tomato Chopped
- 1 Cup Mixed Vegetables (potato, carrots, peas, corn, cauliflower)
- 1 Tbsp Ghee
- ½ Tbsp Turmeric (haldi)
- Salt to taste
- 5 Cups Water
- ½ Cup Dalia (broken wheat)
- ½ Cup Rice
- ½ Tsp Cumin Seeds (jeera)
- ¼ Tsp Asafoetida (hing)
Method
- Wash dal, rice and dalia till clear and soak them in water for half an hour. Drain and keep.
- Heat ghee in a cooker and add cumin seeds, asafoetida and garlic. Saute lightly.
- Add chopped onion and saute till transparent.
- Add tomatoes and all the vegetables. Saute till they soften a bit
- Mix dal, rice and dalia with the vegetables.
- Add salt and turmeric and mix well.
- Cook with 5 cups water in the pressure cooker for 3-4 whistles.
- Open the cooker only after the pressure gets released on its own.
- This khichdi should be cooked well and remain a little watery.
