5 Lessons Kids Can Learn From A Farm Visit.

In today’s era, it has become nearly impossible to deny the presence of technology. Most of us, including our children, are constantly involved with our phones and laptops. In this constant need to be connected, we have forgotten how to disconnect from gadgets and experience life around us.

Today, everything is about instant gratification, getting ahead, and looking for an easy way to get there. There is a lack of compassion, empathy, and a holistic understanding of life.

Over the last two years, the pandemic has changed the way we live, and this has particularly impacted our children. Online classes, lack of outdoor activities, and lack of social interaction have had a physical, social, and emotional impact on children.

Given the current situation, we all know that it’s not safe and prudent to indulge in any sort of social activity. However, is there a way to curate offbeat experiences for children that are socially distanced, safe, and at the same time enjoyable? Yes, there is. A farm visit is one such experience that every child should have access to.

A weekend on a farm with experiences such as playing with animals and helping with chores can create a lifetime of memories.

Every small experience shapes a child’s personality and outlook towards life. As parents, it’s our job to provide these experiences.

Appreciation For Nature And Life

Working on a farm can teach children so many things that will be much more useful than a visit to the mall or a video game session. It may take some time to sink in but these experiences create the basis for a healthy and stable mindset and allow kids to have a little bit of discipline, a lot of creativity, and self-motivation to set goals and make them happen.

Farm life is all about family and neighbours. This is truly where the statement “treat others how you would want to be treated” comes into play. Farming is tough and is never a one-man job. Children constantly learn to work together as a family and a community to get things done.

Love For Animals

Through caring for farm animals, kids learn that in life others often come before self. Animals need to be fed, watered and cared for. Most importantly, animals can teach you compassion, kindness, and responsibility.

Teaches Them The Value Of Time

Nature can place interesting time constraints on farmers when it comes to planting and harvesting. That means there’s often little time to waste. Plantation days can also help instil the importance of time management in kids. When they’re older, they’ll skip procrastination and opt for rolling up their sleeves and getting work done — whatever their field of choice.

Appreciate Food

Farms provide a unique opportunity for kids to see exactly where their food originates. They watch what it takes to grow vegetables, cultivate the land, and care for the plants as they grow.

They watch a seed become a sprout, a sprout becoming a plant, and a plant grows into something they can eat! They know that their food isn’t limitless.

It doesn’t just magically appear on the grocery store shelves. That it took someone’s hard work to put it there and they respect and value that.

At Hosachiguru farms, we have seen a lot of children intrigued with the whole process of growing a vegetable. They are much more conscious about what they are eating and how much they are wasting. Also, they understand the value of sustainably growing each grain, each sprout, and the effort that goes into it.

Value Of Physical Work

Work starts when the sun comes up and doesn’t end until the sun goes down. Kids may not always be working, but they’re always moving. There is little screen time and a lot of outdoor play-time. And, there is room to run, explore and let their imagination go wild, and of course, there’s always tagging along to help with chores.

Though there may be more discipline, there seem to be far fewer rules for kids on a farm. They have the freedom to eat from the garden, run barefoot, splash in mud puddles, and drink from the hose.

At all our farms, we have seen children explore farm life and learn lessons that are beyond the boundaries of the classrooms. It is curated to align the mind and soul with nature.

Small things such as watching a beautiful sunset on the field’s horizon, enjoying quality time with your loved ones, or picking freshly ripened tomatoes from your farm, these simple things in life are something your kids can take far and wide. It will aid in building their character. All the hard work and the fun-filled day on the farm make life’s little rewards sweeter and teachings better.
