Festive Food Hangout: How To Make Traditional Sweets Yummy For Kids Today?

We had a conversation with five lovely foodies, Amrita Raichand (Host, Mummy ka Magic), passionate chef Rekha Kakkar (Food photographer, consultant and founder of My Tasty Curry), Dr. Nandita Iyer (Saffron Trail), Chef Rakhee Vaswani, (Celebrity chef trained from Le Cordon Bleu) and Nutritionist Dhvani Shah. To celebrate this auspicious festival we discussed many special Diwali memories, delicious food, and easy and healthy recipes to dish up this season. The discussion continued with the other guests saying how tweaking recipes to make them appeal to a modern palette would take away from the flavour of a traditional festival and how children have not witnessed generations of family members gathering around to make one Diwali sweet.

Festivals in India are a curious amalgamation of lights, food, and family. So how can India’s biggest festival – Diwali, be any different! The festival of lights, as Diwali is commonly known, is celebrated differently all across the country. Each and every family celebrates it differently and has special memories attached to it.

When there is talk of festival can mouth-watering delicacies be far behind? We had a conversation with five lovely foodies, Amrita Raichand (Host, Mummy ka Magic), passionate chef Rekha Kakkar (Food photographer, consultant and founder of My Tasty Curry), Dr. Nandita Iyer (Saffron Trail), Chef Rakhee Vaswani, (Celebrity chef trained from Le Cordon Bleu) and Nutritionist Dhvani Shah. To celebrate this auspicious festival we discussed many special Diwali memories, delicious food, and easy and healthy recipes to dish up this season.

We started the hangout asking our guests what their favourite Diwali sweet was and the answers ranged from Pedas to Baklava and beyond!

We also spoke about whether children today really enjoy traditional Indian sweets like Pedas, Ghevars, or if they yearn for a new twist on everything! One of our speakers mentioned how her kids love waffles and she ended up making healthy waffles for Navratri, that were gluten free and a huge hit with her family! The discussion continued with the other guests saying how tweaking recipes to make them appeal to a modern palette would take away from the flavour of a traditional festival and how children have not witnessed generations of family members gathering around to make one Diwali sweet.
