What’s the one thing that your kids have started doing more ever since the whole lockdown and social distancing started? Okay- apart from handwashing I mean!

For my kids, it’s got to be quality reading time. I was raising a child who liked to read thankfully, but I noticed with the distractions around her, that habit was going for a toss and wasn’t a part of her everyday ritual. She was getting bored, I could clearly see and that gave me ideas for a change of pace.

Learning is of three types- Auditory, kinesthetic and visual. If your child gets bored with books but wants to listen to stories or if you are too tied up to tell them a story, you’ve got audiobooks to the rescue! Be it during sleepy afternoons, or for a fun bedtime cuddle with the kids, as a parent, I have personally loved audiobooks.

Here’s how audiobooks are great for your kids:

  • Audiobooks work wonders on your child’s pronunciation and modulation– raising them to be li’l storytellers themselves.
  • Visual support is great-but when kids are tuned to listen to stories, their imagination knows no limits. Admit it- we’ve all made a sketch of the BFG or Peter Pan on our minds long before we saw how they actually looked, right?!
  • Easy maintenance and helps you on-the-go (when you begin your travel in the post-COVID world, that is!)
  • Improves your child’s auditory perception and comprehension skills. Builds focus in the process.
  • Helps them go slightly beyond their reading level. ‘Coz listening to a story is easier and more fun than reading it, right?!
  • It is also one of our favourite options to tuck into bed and tune into an audiobook that makes it a perfect bedtime routine for us!

As a big fan of audiobooks myself, I can’t recommend the Storytel app enough for my kids to get them to fall in love with books too! If you are a parent, considering audiobooks for your kids– here is my advice- go for it!
