Nearly everyone I meet is on a diet, was on a diet or is thinking of going on a diet. There is one common thread here. They see it as a limited duration because these diets cannot be sustained for long.

Did you know that this form of yo-yo dieting has an adverse effect on your health? They can lead to long term issues like developing gall bladder stones, changing your thyroid levels, aggravating PCOS, increasing cholesterol and so much more.

Pre and post festivities, everyone is scrambling to lose those few extra pounds. Desperately digging through Google to find a diet that that one thing that claims to melt away fat with little effort.

Most of the diets are so hard because they require all your will power to stick to it while you check the scale daily. One meal with friends or family becomes a battleground where you drink green tea while the rest eat what they like. What’s worse is when you hear things like “ all these diets don’t work” or “nothing will happen if you eat one” etc and 9 out of 10 times it breaks your willpower and you give in! When you are eating out, there are ways to make healthy choices.

To me the bigger concern is risking my health for a quick weight loss solution. Always remember it took time to gain the weight, it will take at least half the time to lose it.

There are 2 issues that worry me

  1. Diet: A diet is a way of eating- just like a vegetarian diet, vegan diet, non-veg diet, Mediterranean diet, Indian diet etc. It is not another word for starvation. Trying to find a quick fix diet that requires great amounts of will power is useless.
  2. Environment: In nearly all cases we are surrounded by people who don’t believe in us, or in what we are doing or our ability to succeed. Be it work, home or diet, this can be very difficult. They look at a situation from their point of view and usually just for that moment. Not once thinking of your situation, effort or goals. This can get so hard sometimes that people start avoiding social gatherings.

I do not stand for any fad diets, I believe that whatever you do must be a lifestyle. Something that

  1. Fits into YOUR lifestyle
  2. Allows you to be flexible
  3. Does not compromise health in the name of weight loss
  4. Allows you to be a social person without being stressed

Before you jump headfirst into some crazy diet – STOP and check if it meets these criteria. Don’t let it all control you. Eat healthily and eat right that’s what you should aim for. There’s a good way to lose that weight and get fit. Read more about it here
