The weather Gods have lately been very confused in most parts of the country- at least here in Delhi! The first half of the days are marked by rains and waterlogged roads and it is a clear struggle to reach the school on time, while by the time the kids are back, it is all hot and sultry again! We don’t have any concrete plans for any outdoor adventure this weekend (at least) in fear of the rains and am planning for a weekend that involves indoor play, games, movies and catching up on a lot of lost sleep! For movie night on Saturday, I was browsing through the ones listed on Amazon Prime- and here’s what struck me.
I have heard of this movie when it released in 2010, and that it had won a lot of awards. But somehow I missed watching it.

The story is about a young boy in rural India, who hasn’t heard much about the political scenario of the country. He has many questions about the President and “why everyone salutes him” during the R-day parade! He is a smart kid who claims he isn’t educated but can speak “English”! Chotu, played by Harsh Mayar, is the little boy we have all met at some point in our lives.
He then chances upon a speech of the late President Dr A P J Abdul Kalam where he inspires the next generation of the country to go for their dreams. He is mighty impressed with the speech and li’l Chotu decides to rewrite his destiny. He befriends the prince of the town’s Haveli who helps him in this journey. What happens next forms the crux of the story.
Here’s why you and the kids will love this:
- The storyline and narration are simple and not complex. There is no unnecessary hype or drama revolving the hero of the story- that’s the best part.
- The star of the movie is easily the child artist- and this role won Harsh Mayar many awards, including the National Award for Best Child Artist.
- It is a pity that this generation of kids cannot witness any more inspirational talks of the greatest President we have had- Dr APJ Abdul Kalam. His words have motivated thousands of Indians and as parents, there are some key takeaways and life lessons from his quotes. (Read here).
Put away your phones and laptops for a cosy movie night with the kids and get set to be inspired and enjoy as you witness the magic of Kalam on screen! Happy movie night!
