Experiment with magnets & paper clips for kids

This wasn’t what we had set out to do but it was something we learnt in the myriad ways when you are busy and your child gets their hands on to something. Sounds familiar doesn’t it.

Now that the daughter is tall and she can reach for the tap all by herself life is clearly more difficult. On one occasion when I was busy giving directions to someone coming to our house she filled some water in a bowl and decided to hide in the room. While she was hiding she reached out for the husbands drawer and pulled out all his stationary including some paper clips and dropped it in the bowl of water.

As soon as I finished the call I rushed to check what she was upto and saw her hiding in one corner with the bowl. It later struck me when we were heading to the kitchen to chuck the water in the sink that we could use our fridge magnets to do some magic.

We later used the fridge magnets to get the paper clips in the bowl dancing by just moving the magnet over the paper clips. The daughter was awestruck as she she saw how the magnet could make the paper clip dance. She tried her hand at tit as well and was so happy that even though she was a baby she could do the trick like mom.

The day went on with everybody witnessing her magical powers as she moved the magnet around and chanted abracadabra

Its a fun and easy experiment and it teaches them really cool stuff so please try it.

Fill a jar with water and drop two or three paper clips into the water.

Tell your children that you can make the paper clips dance up and down in the water without touching them.

Then move a magnet up and down outside the jar to make the clips move.

Let each of your children have a turn making the clips dance.

Explain that the magnetic force from the magnet passes through the glass and water to make the clips move.
