10 Things That Go Out Of The Window When You Become A Mom

Enjoying an uninterrupted night’s sleep: The kind where you don’t change diapers, wake up to give your coughing child some warm water and medicine, or just wake up because you think your child has rolled off the bed. Travelling without carrying too much stuff: The list of essential things to pack when travelling with kids is insane and when it comes to packing their favourite toys it is a tough choice between what to take and what to leave behind. Watching TV: Let’s just say I don’t remember the last time I heard every single dialogue on the show or movie without being constantly interrupted by my child demanding to know what is happening to the uncle on TV. Going to a Salon or Spa: It takes quite a lot of planning to schedule my visit to a Salon & spa and once I get there the only thing I can think of or talk about is whether my children are doing fine with their father taking care of them.

You would be lying to yourself if you have never thought about ‘how my life has changed and what am I really doing with my life? If time is the most precious commodity and the only thing you yearned for after becoming a parent.’ We all go through that and have our top 10 lists of what we really want. That led me to think about all the things I have missed at some point or the other after having kids. Here is a list. Feel free to add in more of your own!

1. Enjoying an uninterrupted night’s sleep: The kind where you don’t change diapers, wake up to give your coughing child some warm water and medicine, or just wake up because you think your child has rolled off the bed. Just blissful 9 hours of sleep.

2. Reading: I pick up a new book absolutely confident that I will finish it off in the next few days. But after the first few pages of enthusiastic reading, my relationship with my book wears thin. My goal to read the book after my child has fallen sleep never takes off. Mostly because I am asleep first.

3. Dressing up: Where is the time? I can’t wear heavy jewelry because they will hurt my baby, or my child will have something to pull and end up hurting me. I’ve not worn dressy clothes because how do you clean spit up off fancy clothes? My dressing yo yo’s from sweat pants to uber cool dresses because dressing up is a luxury.

4. Stepping out of the house at anytime of the day: When was the last time I left home in the morning, spent it shopping, chatting, brunching with friends, or just going to work guilt free? I’ve lost count of the years gone by!

5. Enjoying a meal at a restaurant: The new definition of fine dining is – one parent eats while the other takes care of the baby. The other way to do this is eat while the battery on the iPad lasts. Lol!

6.Bathroom break: It is literally like a game show where you need to finish your ablutions, shower and be out before your time is up! If you take even a minute longer, be prepared to be interrupted by persistent knocks on the door, toys being pushed from under the door, or even screams and cries.

7. Talking on the phone: When was the last time you spoke to someone on the phone and didn’t say, “I will have to call you back”?

8. Travelling without carrying too much stuff: The list of essential things to pack when travelling with kids is insane and when it comes to packing their favourite toys it is a tough choice between what to take and what to leave behind.

9. Watching TV: Let’s just say I don’t remember the last time I heard every single dialogue on the show or movie without being constantly interrupted by my child demanding to know what is happening to the uncle on TV.

10. Going to a Salon or Spa: It takes quite a lot of planning to schedule my visit to a Salon & spa and once I get there the only thing I can think of or talk about is whether my children are doing fine with their father taking care of them. Sure enough, that is always followed by a call from the husband wondering just how long I am going to take!
