Thinking of donning your woollies and eating some warm roasted moongphali? Yes! Winter is here and that means one thing for people in Delhi – make the most of Delhi’s food. Delhi has always been synonymous with food. Delhiites absolutely love their food, especially in the winters. There are certain sights and sounds which flood the streets of Delhi only in winter. Every corner has someone selling some yummalicious things to snack on.

Let me take you for a quick tour of the food you must-have if you’re heading to Delhi this winter.

Shakarkandi Ki Chaat ( Sweet Potato Chaat)

You will find a chaat wala at every corner in Delhi during the winter months. The sweet potato pieces are fried, mixed with some yummy masala and served warm in little disposable plates. You can make it spicy or mix it with regular potatoes. You have enough options to choose from.

Rewri & Gajak Carts

The thela walas selling rewri, gajak, til ki patti, til laddos, popcorn etc is a sight synonymous with Delhi winter. Each vendor claims to have the best fare and I like trying something from every cart. By the way, we have a fabulous til ladoo recipe you can try at home.

Moongphali/Groundnuts

People sitting on the sides of the road with their kadai roasting groundnuts is a sight that is familiar to Delhi. For some shelling groundnuts may seem painful. But in the winter, my favourite past time is sitting in the sun, shelling groundnuts which have been roasted. I don’t always get to eat it all since the kids and husband can be a tad lazy in that area. But its still fun!

Golgappas

The Delhi golgappas are different from the ones you find in Kolkata and Mumbai. The golgappas in Delhi are made with sooji (semolina) and the potato masala is quite different. A definite must-have on your Delhi food list.

Ram Ladoos

These are hot moong dal balls that are topped with spicy coriander chutney and radish sticks. Every colony in Delhi has their own special ram ladoo stall and in the evenings you’ll see everyone milling around trying to get a plate.

Hot Jalebis

Hot thin jalebis make the perfect lip-smacking food during the cold winter. Evening tea with some crisp jalebis is ideal.

Matra Kulcha

Garam-garam matra-kulcha anyone? Big brass pots on carts can be seen with a huge crowd around it normally. Easy on the tummy and on the pocket, this Delhi food is extremely satisfying to eat when the winter wind gets really cold. The kids love it too since you can spice it up or down depending on your tastes.

Eat loads of gur and other winter food as well. Don’t forget to enjoy your Delhi food trail and tell us which one was your favourite!
